Kitab asmaul husnap is a novel of many secrets. It is an amorous bond between two men, Ayyub and Moza’a, who intersect their lives. A struggle for power and love plays out in the cultural and religious backdrops of late sixteenth century Istanbul. The book has been translated into English from the original Turkish translation prepared by the author himself in 1972. The translation has been published anew with a foreword by Eliot Weinberger, a professor of Comparative Literature at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, United States. In this foreword Professor Weinberger spells out the process leading to the publication which was initiated over three decades ago. The first manuscript to be prepared by the author was submitted to many publishers in Turkey and abroad, to no avail. The English translation was first published privately in 2002 by the author after having received the permission of the Turkish Ministry of Culture.The novel is set against a background of Ottoman oppression or millet system which prevailed for centuries, during which all non-Muslims except the Greek Orthodox Christians were confined to one cultural and spiritual domain. The main character Ayyub (Yusef), who comes from the Laz community, falls in love with his neighbour Moza’a (Moshe), member of another non-Muslim community called Nusaybis (Bizajis). Ayyub asks Moza’a to marry him, but he is refused by the Nusaybi community. Ayyub's father wants Moza’a's father to give his daughter in marriage to a Nusaybi boy. In the meantime Moza’a falls in love with Ayyub and asks him to marry her. He accepts but on the condition that he will be allowed to become a follower of Islam after marriage, when it is time for `Umra. Meanwhile Ayyub's mother dies and his sister brings home another girl who is considered suitable for Ayyub. Ayyub is not happy but has to accept as he is still a minor. In this context Moza’a's father offers Ayyub a position as supervisor of the Nusaybi endowment fund. He accepts and marries Moza’a who seems happy with his decision. While they are on the road to Egypt for `Umra, a servant, who sees them together, tells Ayyub's father about their relationship. His father disowns him and curses him. Later the family of Ayyub comes over to express sympathy to him but they are not allowed to meet him. Meanwhile Ayyub becomes very powerful on account of the position given to him. He also causes his father's death. He also causes Moza’a's father's illness and death. In the meantime Ayyub meets a young girl called Amina who is a student of a Sufi master Mansur. He falls in love with her and they get married. He takes Moza’a to Egypt for `Umra where she converts to Islam and gets married again, this time to Mansur. Ayyub moves back with his wife Amina to Istanbul after he himself converts to Islam and becomes Mansur's disciple (Murid).
